Story

I fell in love with soccer when I was young — not casually, but deeply. It wasn’t just a sport to me… it became part of who I was. Soccer taught me how to fight, how to lead, and how to show up with discipline and heart even when no one is watching.

Then life had other plans.

A traumatic accident while playing the game I loved led to eight surgeries in four years, countless setbacks, and a life I never planned — one shaped by limitations, obstacles, and chronic pain.

The things that once felt effortless — running, sprinting, pivoting — became the very things I may never do again.

But just because your body changes doesn’t mean your love for the game disappears.

It doesn’t fade. It doesn’t move on. It stays.

For a long time, I grieved the athlete I used to be. I tried to accept that soccer would become something I only watched from the sidelines. And don’t get me wrong — watching my boys play means more to me than I can put into words. It’s emotional in the best way: proud, grateful, amazed.

But deep down, something still felt missing.

After my most recent surgery — a spinal cord stimulator to help manage some of the pain — I was finally able to get outside with my boys again. Passing. Juggling. Laughing. Making memories I wasn’t sure I’d ever get to make.

And feeling the ball at my feet again felt like my heart was saying:

“I can’t say goodbye to this. Not fully. Not forever.”

That’s where Rooted FC began — born from heartbreak, but built from hope.

Rooted FC exists for the injured. The disabled. The older athlete. The ones who still feel that pull in their chest when they hear a ball being kicked or step onto a field — anyone whose body changed before their love for the game did.

Walking soccer is more than a modification. It’s a return. A place where resilience is respected, positivity is protected, and community comes first.

Some days acceptance is still hard. Some days I’m still angry at what has changed. But I refuse to let what tried to break me be the end of my story.

Instead, I’m choosing to let it shape something good.

That’s who Rooted FC is for — the part of you that never stopped loving the game, even when life forced you to play differently.

I’m staying rooted — in hope, in healing, and in the love of the game.
